Several sources have shown the wife of William to have been MaryAtherton, daughter of Major Humphrey Atherton, probably due tothe fact that they were married by Major Atherton, but this isnot proven and, to the contrary, this researcher has foundinformation indicating the opposite, such as the marriage ofMary Atherton, daughter of Major Humphrey Atherton, married toJoseph Weeks on 9 Apr. 1667. This is during the time she wouldhave been married to William Billing(s), and it is unlikely thatMajor Atherton had two daughters named Mary that lived toadulthood. Also see Records of the Proprietors of theNarragansett, otherwise called The Fones Record, Rhode IslandColonial Gleanings, by James N. Arnold, ed. of the NarragansettHistorical Register, Compiled Vital Records of Rhode Island,etc., in which the various land dealings (also known as theAtherton Purchase) by Major Atherton are detailed. In severalof the deed records, Major Atherton's sons and son-in-laws arenamed, but William Billing(s) is not one of them. In addition,this submitting researcher has found many marriages performed byMajor Atherton so that his performance of the ceremony wouldnot, in itself, be a clue. Therefore, this researcher choosesto leave the last name of Mary blank until more conclusiveevidence can be found. However, William Billing and Mary ? weremarried in Dorchester, MA, in 1658 according to An Index toVital Records of Dorchester, Massachusetts, through 1825, bySanford Charles Gladden, found by this submitting researcher inthe Texas State Archives in Austin, TX. Mary's surname isblank, whether this is due to illegibility or if the recorditself is blank, I do not know.


The LDS site on the web shows confusion about her birth anddeath. The dates range from 1635 to 1647, all useDorchester,Suffolk,MA except one that showsDorchester,Suffolk,England. One record says she died in 1671somewhere in MA.
They all have different file numbers.
