  Notes	Quaker per Jan Dickenson. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [In Lilla Briggs Sampson's 1930 manuscript, "John Briggs of Newportand Portsmouth, Rhode Island, p. 15 Thomas.] Stearns in his "Anci ent Homes of Quaker Hill, Dutchess County, NewYork" states that "John Briggs w as one of the residents and that hisland was held by many generations of Brigg s." "The Briggs, Akin and Taber Families were Quakers and came fromDarmouth , Massachusetts, to Quaker Hill, New York. Quaker Hill wassixty-two miles nor th of New York City, twenty-eight miles east ofHudson River, and three and thr ee-quarters miles from Pawling, NewYork." Quaker Hill was the first settlemen t in a strip of landcalled "The Oblong" which lay along the Eastern boundary o f New YorkState, now a part of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties. Beeckman's Precinct was also a part of Quaker Hill.
