Excerpts from: HOFFACKERS IN PENNSYLVANIA, GERMANY, & SWITZERLAND byMarvinPattillo, pg 1. (Marvin was a genealogist doing research inGermany & Switzerland for Dixie Rosier)
The original record of the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of York,
Pennsylvania (Film # 387946 Family History - FHL - Salt Lake City,Utah) shows
the birth and baptism of a Johann Michael, the illegitimate son ofJohann
Michael Hoffacker. The child was born 4 Feb 1744 and baptized 10 Mar1744. The witnesses were Jacob Billmeier and his wife Elena. Perhapsone of the
significant overlooked facts in this record is that Jacob Billmeierwas also a
passenger on the Loyal Judith when it arrived 25 Sep 1732. He was only18
years old when he arrived.
In the family history, Huffaker Kith & Kin, compiled by MarrianneSunderland,
the absence of a mothers name in this baptism record is explained by afamily
story handed down that Johann Michael was with a half breed Indianwoman in
York County, Pennsylvania.
It is interesting that Dr. R. O. Huffaker wrote in the forward forHugh Dayton
Huffaker's History (pg 9) stating that Michael Hoffacker, theimmigrant, had
three sons, John, Henry, and Michael.

John W. Heisey, genealogist and "Director of Research" at TheHistorical
Society of York County in his reply of a request from G. W. Alguirewrites to

Item d. The records of Christ Lutheran Church, York, show thefollowing
children as being born to Michael and Catharine HOFFACKER;
1. John Michael, born 4 February 1744, baptized 10 March1744,
sponsors at baptism being Jacob and Helena Billmeyer. No name of themother
of the child was listed. (Note: This is very questionable as to beingthe
child of Michael & Catharine, unless this is the child of JohannMichael the
immigrant who also had a wife named Catharine - nor verified - veryiffy!)
Item h. A check of deeds for York County prior to 1850 shows the
following deeds concerning Michael HOFFACRE:
1. Deed 2 H 200, dated 15 December 1787, and recorded 18June 1792.
Michael Hoffacker, yeoman, and wife Elizabeth, of Manheim Township,York
County, sold 10 acres of land in Manheim Township to Anthony Bricker, resident
of Manheim Township, York County. The land had been bought by Michael
HOFFACKER on 4 June 1785.
2. Deed 2 T 17, dated 15 August 1807, and recorded 15December 1807,
Michael HOFFACKER of Manheim Township, bought 6 acres of land inManheim
Township, from George Werner, of Manheim Township.
3. Deed 2 X 16, dated 21 August 1809, and recorded 27 March1812,
Michael HOFFACRE of Manheim Township, York County, bought 52 acres ofland in Manheim Township, from John HOFFACRE of Manheim Township.
Item i. A check of early land warrants and land drafts for YorkCounty
prior to 1800, indicates that Michael HOEOCKER received landapplication #
5007 dated 30 May 1768, for 100 acres of land in Manheim Township,York
County, and the property was surveyed on the ____ day of the tenthmonth
(October) 1768, at which time the property contained 67 1/2 acres.

Johann Michael Hoffaker family inSappemeer, Groningen, Netherland
Also the Lenhart Kegel (Koegel) family
My 5th Great-Grandfather, Johann Michael Hoffacker, according to ourresearch was born about 1698 in Mutterstadt, Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany.
His Hoffacker ancestors emigrated from Zurich, Switzerland area inthe Pfalz in the year 1666. The eventually endedup i Mutterstadt,Pfalz, Bavaria, Germany. Their family records was foundddin the ParishRegister of Mutterstadt, Evangelishe Kirche
Since the Hoffacker's had relatives living in Switzerland, I am surethey kept in touch by writing letters back and forth between Germanyand Switzerland. The relatives in Switzerland most likely told JohannMichael Hoffacker's family where the Sw
Mennonites communities were in the Netherlands.
Johann Michael Hoffacker was in a unique situation. He was of Swissdescent, but was living in Germany. It was illegal to leave Germany atthat time! People risked their lives to leave Germany. Since JohannMichael Hoffacker was of Swiss descent, I
believe he left Germany to join with the Swiss Mennonites in theNetherland. Johann Michael Hoffacker took a friend, Jacob Billmeyer, with him. He left the Mutterstadt area, traveled on the Rhine River,as well as land about 150 miles to either Emd
or Ditzum, Germany.
It was from one of these two towns that they went fishing in theDollart Bay. I am sure Germany guards were on the land and waterpatroling the area for people trying to leave Germany to get to theNetherlands.
I believe Johann Michael Hoffacker and Jacob Billmeyer went fishingabout all day. When it was dusk, they crossed the waters of theDollart Bay and landed on the Netherlands side in the morning beforeit was light.
When in the Netherlands they traveled into the land area nearSappemeer, Groningen, Netherlands. Sappemeer is only 20 miles from theGerman border. It was here they joined with the Swiss Mennonites fromSwitzerland. (Other Hoffacker relatives may
come this way also.)
Johann Michael Hoffacker wanted to stay in this out of the way placeto better protect himself as being from Germany.
I believe it was here that Hohann Michael Hoffacker met his wife whoI believe to be Lenhart Kegel's daughter, they were from Switzerland, and with the Swiss Mennonitess in the Netherlands. A Dutch ministermay have married them.
I wrote to the Central Bureau Voor Genealogie in the Netherlands tosee if they would have marriage records for the years I was interestedin. They told me they had no central index on the registers ofBaptisms, Marriages, and Burials prior to 181
So right now further research is impossible there!
The Swiss Mennonites did not baptize their children, so there wouldbe no Christening records for Johann Michael and wife's children inthe Netherlands. However, there are church records on the SwissMennonites who were helped by the churches. The
were four Swiss Mennonites communities in the Netherlands.
In Sappemeer, Groningen, Netherlands records were not available onthe Johann Michael Hoffacker family or the Lenhart Kegel (Koegel)family.
A letter from the Groningen Archieven, Groningen, Netherlands saidthe Mennonite community of Sappemeer records started in 1785, thoughthe community was much older. If Johann Michael Hoffacker, his wifeand relatives were there, the trace they di
leave have subsequently perished, such as records on the first yearsof the Sappemeer community.
Since no records are available in the Groningen Archieven I cannotprove that they were there. I do believe they were in Sappemeer,Groningen, Netherland. They traveled around 120 miles to Rotterdam,Netherlands where they boarded the ship Loyal
Judith in 1732 came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 25, 1732.
An Adeline Anderson has stated in a record on the computer that thewife and one son died and were buried at sea coming to America.
The Pickett Family Organization and their researcher, Mrs Dixie(Ross) Rosier, who did research on the Netherlands from January 1999to January 2000.
