Story printed in the Logan County Arkansas Historical Society Bookwritten by Annetta Mullings: "One of Logan County's many interesting citizens was James D.Mullings, born near Shoal Creek in 1881. His grandparents Carol andSusan came from Alabama, probably after the Civil War, and settled near Shoal Creek. Of their children I only know thatEliza married John Sims, Fanny married Sam Varnell, John marriedVirginia Horne (grandson Leonard lives at Midway) and Felix marriedMartha Mitchell. Felix built a one room log cabin east of Midway. Hissons were Issac (son Vernon lives East of Midway) and Jim, who marriedMae Durning in 1901. Jim was a man of many hats! About 1915 he "carried mail" from ShoalCreek to Strafford, using a one horse cart or sometimes on horseback.Around that time he also had a small store at Shoal Creek. In 1917 they lived on the corner Southeast of the old jail in Paris.Jim worked for August Barts, first in a flour mill, then at the firstElectric plant in Paris. Mid-afternoon he fired the boilers up andfrom 4 P.M. until midnight Paris had electric lights. He had a broom factory in a shed at the same house. He raised broomcorn in Southtown, made brooms and sold them in the area. Cotton went up to 40 cents a pound during World War I, so Jim movedSouth of Midway and planted cotton but by harvest time it was 10cents. Work during the 1920's included: a saw mill South of Midway on ShoalCreek, with his brother Issac; clerk at Aurther Gray's General Storein Prairie View; clerk at the Farmers Union Store in Shoal Creek; anda saw mill with Tater Mashow South of Paris. During the 1930's and early 1940's he worked for the City of Parisfiring boilers for the electric company, laying water lines andsetting meters, and running the water filter plant. His last job was a neighborhood grocery store on Brown Street inParis, but he was never to busy to be a good neighbor, father andgrandfather., My husband Jimmy (his grandson) admired him as the mosthonest, kindest man he ever saw. Jim and Mae's children are Olen (deceased) who drove school buses forParis Schools for many years; Mattie Robinson who lives in Midway;Russell (my father-in-law) who was a coal miner and taxi driver inParis and lives in Oklahoma; and Faye who worked for the railroad andlives in Paris. James died at the Ozark Hospital and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery atParis, Logan County, Arkansas"
