Patience Crouch was baptized Nov. 5, 1732, by Rev. Shearjashub Bourn, in a Congregational church in Scituate, Massachusetts. Her mother's name was Mary. (FHL microfilm # 0496902, "Vital Records of Scituate, Massachusetts, 1633-1850, births, pg.99, 435, film # 0369741, "History of Scituate, Massachusetts", pg. 186, and IGI individual record for Crouch, Patience). No parents are mentioned for her in the Vital Records, but the IGI has her mother listed as "Mary Crouch". There are also no other persons with the surname Crouch listed in any of these birth records for Scituate, but in the separate category for births of "Negroes", there is "Mary, negro, daughter of Meriah, May 4, 1708", which would make her about the right age to be the mother of Patience.

Sampson Dunbar's first wife, Patience Crouch, was probably also an Indian, or part Indian, from the Mattakeeset branch of the Massachusett tribe located near Scituate, where Patience was either born or just christened in 1732. At that time there was a female sachem (chief) of the Mattakeesets named Patience Thomas, who was preceeded by another female sachem named Patience Keurp (probably a misspelling). I have also found four other Indian women named Patience in that part of Plymouth County, early 18th century. We also find a large Crouch family among the Dartmouth Wampanoags in the Earle Report of 1860.
